1997 Pontiac Grand Am bringing it from North Carolina to California.
I am bringing this vehicle to California from N Carolina. Will it need additional parts or a conversion in order to qualify for smog test? If so, how much will this cost? It currently passes the emissions test in North Carolina. Thank you for your help. Answer:
No additional emission components are needed to get your Pontiac to pass the
California smog check. It's true, there is a difference with California
legal and Federal legal emission requirements. And, for the most part
California is stricter. However, a USED vehicle which has all the Federal
required emission components (such as in this case), can pass the California
smog inspection process and be legally registered in this state as long as
the vehicle's exhaust emissions fall within California's limits. If your
Pontiac passed N. Carolina emission, more then likely it will pass California emissions as well.
