Check engine light on due to EGR valve: 1996 Toyota Camry 4 cyl

I had the check engine light read & was told its the EGR system but the tech couldnt specify without a diagnostic. I replaced all hoses, the egr vacuum modulator, the pvc valve and cleaned the egr valve, & replaced the gasket for it. The mechanic that did the work said the egr valve still works so there was no need to replace it. After all of this the light is still on, even after it had been reset. I just wanted to know if i reset it before the smog test would it fail? please help! thanks!
Answer:

If you reset the check engine light before the smog test you will have also cleared the "emission monitors". The emission monitors, also known as readiness flags, are required in order to pass the smog inspection. The only way to set the emission monitors is to drive your Camry for at least a week; in which time the check engine light will probably re-illuminate.
