Failed California smog test for high NOx - 1992 Toyota Corolla
I recently had my 1992 toyota corolla smog test and it failed the no (ppm) section of the test. So I read my manual and have done the checks I can do by myself and I did not find any problems also I removed the EGR valve and it was really clean. Also there is no check engine light on at all. I really want to fix this myself so what are the other problems me EGR system could have other then the EGR valve. Also is there anyway I can get some help in finding a smog repair station. That will tell me what the problem is with out paying or paying a arm and a leg. Answer:
Ok, so you've ensured the EGR works (it opens when applied direct vacuum) and its passages are clean; so that exhaust passes from the exhaust manifold into the intake manifold. Now you need to make sure that vacuum actually gets to the EGR transducer valve, and that the EGR transducer valve is not plugged up. The transducer valve is located near the EGR valve; usually directly above or next to. If the entire EGR system is operational, you want to start looking into a possible lean fuel condition... perhaps a defective oxygen sensor. A fuel feedback test should be conducted, and we can only recommed a certified smog check repair station do this.
