Why does my 2005 Toyota Matrix need a smog check this year?

I submitted my vehicle registration for renew this year and they asked me to get a smog check. Do you know why? I've never had to do one in the past and the car is not that old..2005. Also, can you tell me where I can get a smog check for $20 in the westside of LA.

Vehicles which are 6 years and older need to be smog checked every other year. Seems your Toyota Matrix has reached its maturity and will now begin requiring smog checks. Passing them should not be a problem, since your vehicle is still fairly new (assuming you've kept it in good shape). As far as a $20 dollar smog check... those are rare.
