My 2000 Hyundai Accent needs a smog check. How much time do I have?
I just bought a Hyundai Accent and the registration tags are expired. If I pay the title fees, how long do I have to obtain a smog certificate? The dmv used to give you 90 days. Do they give you a temporary operating permit for at least a month? And if so how do I obtain one? Answer:
The DMV gives you 10 days from the date of purchase to register a vehicle in your name. A smog certificate is due during this title transfer process. There is no grace period. Should you be unable to provide a smog certificate during the title transfer process, you may ask the DMV for an extension. They may give you a few more days to return with the smog certificate in hand.
Usually they will only offer you a temporary operating permit if your vehicle is not passing the smog check and you need time to perform repairs. Getting a permit costs $50.00.
