2001 BMW 325i failed smog test, catalyst and EVAP monitors not ready.

2001 BMW 325i CEL (error code P0128) on due to radiator coolant thermostat . Clear Code with scanner, drove about 50 miles and took it in for smog check Test Only Station. CEL did not come on during smog test. According to the printout, emission all pass, but Smog check fail reason - Check Engine Light on (MIL) I replaced the thermostat. CEL then went off on its own. But when I connect it to a scanner, the same P0128 code showed up. I cleared the light. Drove about 260 miles and took it for a retest. Technicians used a portable scanner and says Catalyst and EVAP monitors are not ready and would fail the test again. Told me to drive more miles with air condition on and rear defrost on, open all widows and drive with 2 or 3 gear. he says German car may take up to 1,000 miles of driving in order to pass the test. I found the BMW drive cycle posted online, which essentially says need to start engine cold, idle for 3 mins, drive 20 t0 30 mph, then 40 to 60 mph for 15 mins, then decelerate to a stop and idle for 5 mins. Should I be following this drive cycle exactly in order to get the C and EVAP monitors ready? Is there an easier way or other ways to get the BMW to pass smog test?
Answer:

The drive cycle you've outlined will work to set the Catalyst monitor, for the EVAP monitor however, you'll need to drive your BMW, as you've mentioned, but with the fuel tank 3/4 full, and when you do come to the stop (turn off the engine), let your vehicle sit for 30 to 45 minutes. The 30 to 45 minutes is the time it will take for the EVAP monitor to realize a cool down and implement the "pressure drop" test in the fuel tank.
