Failed smog for 2000 Dodge Durango 4x4 5.9L

My Durango recently failed a smog check. It has 204k miles, passed all the emissions tests, but failed due to engine light. I have been told the #6 cylinder is weak, so my question is, is there any chance of it passing smog and what would you suggest? or am I going to have to change the motor to make it work, which I'm really not willing to do? Thank you for your help.
Answer:

The check engine light, along with being on, has specific OBDII trouble code(s) stored with in the ECU (Engine Control Unit). The Trouble Code(s) will direct the smog technician to the emission component responsible for causing the check engine light to illuminate. In this specific case the stored trouble code(s) may indicate a misfire and not an actual defective emission component. We're assuming this based on what you have been apparently told regarding cylinder 6 being weak, possibly due to weak valve springs, worn valves and/or piston rings. If this is in fact the case, you may very well need to repair the engine, maybe not necessary replace the motor, but repair what is causing cyl 6 to lose compression.
