I bought my car in January 2010 and the previous owner provided smog inspection certification December 2009. As I am going back to Norway I will sell my car in mid-July. Does this mean that I have to provide a new smog inspection certification before the sale/transfer? The reason I ask is because of this sentence from the DMV-website:
"The inspection is not required on a transfer if a biennial smog certification was submitted to DMV within 90 days prior to the vehicle transfer date (a vehicle inspection report may be required for proof of certification)".
Is it then sufficient to submit the certification from November 2009 before the upcoming transfer? Answer:
You will need to provide the buyer of your Mercedes Benz (MBZ) with a new
smog check certificate. The smog certificate obtained in December is no
longer valid for neither transfer of title or vehicle registration renewal.
California smog check certificates are only valid for 90 days for
registration renewal purposes, and valid for only 60 days when obtained
specifically for the purpose of selling a vehicle. Assuming your MBZ has
been kept up you should have no trouble passing the smog inspection.
Mercedes Benz has a reputation for passing smog inspections when properly
warmed up.
