Will Modified Stock Air Box Pass? 2002 Toyota Tundra
I have a completely stock system with one exception. I cut a hole 3 inch hole out the side of my stock, factory airbox to run a pipe ending behind the grille, in order to get more airflow. Will this cause me to fail the smog inspection in California? Also, I am able to cap off the pipe if necessary; would this make a difference? I have to pass a smog check for registration renewal.
Answer:
The modification you've made to the air box will be considered an emission tamper. The smog check technician will have to enter into the smog system that your vehicle has a tampered intake system; subsequently your Toyota Tundra will fail the smog test. Capping the intake hose which you've installed will not allow the vehicle to pass. The fact that the original intake air box has been tampered with is a smog test failure.
