Does my 1979 El Camino need a smog check?

I want to register my car in California for the first time, but my parents say that my car will not be able to be registered because my car does not have a smog check certificate. How do I find out if my car has a smog check or not?
Answer:

You will need to take your El Camino in to a local smog check center and have it smog checked in order to receive a smog check certificate. If your vehicle appears to have had smog components removed ask the smog technician prior to the smog check to take a quick look and see if there are any parts missing. So long as everything is there and functioning properly you may go ahead with the smog test, and assuming your vehicle passes the smog check, be issued a smog check certificate. The certificate will be electronically transfered to the DMV via the smog machine and your El Camino will be eligible for California registeration.
