I own a 2003 Chevy Impala. I need to replace my catalytic converter and I am being told that the part can only be replaced by a dealer part yet the part is available at multiple parts store. In order to pass smog check does it have to be a dealer part? Answer:
It does not need to be replaced with a dealer part. You can buy a California approved aftermarket Catalytic Converter for your Chevy from a local auto part store and have a muffler shop put it on. Just make sure the CAT you purchase has an Executive Order number (EO#). EO numbers are given to emission parts which are approved for sale and use in California.
