2002-2005 Nissan Sentra Precat Recall - Can I remove the Precat?

My 2002 Nissan Sentra's precat disintegration failure is leading to Catalytic Converter particles getting sucked into the EGR, and then to the pistons, scoring the cylinder walls and causing an engine breakdown. I have 130k miles on the engine. I have ordered a re-manufactured engine. Nissan does not have a fix they just replace precat or engine and its starts all over again. The precat breakdown can happen to anyone whether a cautious or spirited driver. I want to know if I can have the precat taken out. These cars have a precat and mid cat installed and other states people do pass the smog check with the precat gone. I'm afraid of having this precat in my new engine and have it break down later. Please help!
Answer:

Your Nissan will fail the smog inspection in California if the pre-cat is removed. Nissan does have a precat recall and will inspect and repair any 2002 through 2005 Nissan which experiences this problem. Nissan can reprogram the Engine Control Module to run leaner. They will test the pre-catalyst to determine if it needs to be replaced. They may also install new heat shields.
