Does a 1980 Toyota Pickup require a CAT?

I was looking to purchase a 1980 Toyota Pick Up 4x4... but it does not have a catalytic converter... is that a requirement for a 1980 pickup in CA? Or is that fine? Is there other issues aside from the CAT that I should worry about? The CAT seems like the most expensive part to have to add... and would surely put it out of budget for me. Thanks for your help.
Answer:

There is a difference with California legal and Federal legal emission requirements. However if your Toyota pickup is equipped with all the Federal required emission components (which is originaly equipped with) it can pass the California smog check and register with the CA DMV. The rule is any USED vehicle which is equipped with the necessary Federal Emission Components is eligible for California registration as long as the vehicle's exhaust emissions fall within California's limits and the vehicle's emission system has not been tampered with. Now in terms of which smog parts your Toyota was required the have (federally)... Your 1980 Toyota must be equipped with a CAT. Smog Pump, EGR valve/system, PCV, and ACL (air cleaner heat duct).
