2001 Subaru Outback Limited needs a Catalytic Converter Trouble Code P0420

I recently purchased a 2001 Subaru Outback with a 2.5L engine. The catalytic converter is bad. The initial check engine light came on after only 70 miles. I took it back to the used car dealer that sold it to me and they put on their scanner and found code P0420. They then reset the code without my knowledge and told me to drive it and see if it comes back on. After 6 weeks or so it came back on and they said it was the catalytic converter and they would not cover it under their waranty. Do I have any recourse? If not since the car was originaly sold on the east coast can I just put a new catalytic converter in from another state or does it have to be for California? I have heard that a California cat will not work well since the rest of the engine was designed for outside California. Thx for your help. I look forward to hearing from you.
Answer:

The MOTOR Emissions Application Guide indicates both Federal and California emissions legal 2001 Subaru Outbacks require the same type of Catalytic Converters (Type TWC). You may purchase a new CAT from both within California or out-of-state (if in fact your Subaru is only 49-State emission certified).
