2002 Toyota Camry Missing Gas Tank Vent Flap

Sometime this year the little round silver flap/valve covering the gas tank hole disappeared (probably inside the tank??) We noticed it recently and are now due to get a smog check next month. I read that newer cars (2006+) don't even have it anymore anyway. Is that true and will the absence of the tank flap/valve cover (don't know the proper term for it) cause us to fail the visual emissions inspection? Do we really need to go get this fixed before the smog test? Don't want to get "hosed". Thank you for your help with this. Nacho

Answer:

You are correct in terms of your 2002 Toyota Camry not needed the EVAP Functional Test (which tests your Toyota's EVAP system) however the gas tank filler neck and CAP is still inspected the during the smog inspection. It is not considered part of the EVAP functional test. It is part of the EVAP visual test.

Prior to getting your smog test we recommend having your car's gas tank filler neck repaired.
