Why does my Subaru Outback need a smog two years in a row?

I bought this Subaru Outback last July 2011. A smog check was required to register it so I had it done and it passed. I just received my registration renewal due in October 2012 and it says I need a Smog Certification again. Since I did a smog check last year, why do I need to do another one this year?

Answer:

The smog check you obtained during the purchase of this Subaru did not reset the years (odd or even) in which the registration renewal will require a smog check. It appears this vehicle may have been getting smog checks yearly for the past three years; once in 2010 during it's regular smog check requirement cycle, then in 2011 when you bought it, and now again in 2012 (back in cycle).
