1993 Nissan Altima - Should the smog tech disconnect the TPS during the smog check?

Should smog technician disconnect the TPS when testing 1993 Nissan Altima GXE? Should test be done with overdrive off?

Had my 1993 Nissan Altima smogged at a local shop and noticed that the tech disconnected the Throttle Position Sensor during the test. He also performed the test with the "overdrive" function on the car "off". The only reason that I am questioning these items is because the car BARELY missed passing, due to High CO at low speed (.03% over) and High NO (35 ppm over). I questioned the tech about why he disconnected anything and the overdrive issue, and he did not give a straight answer. The car has always passed before, and with numbers THAT close - I believe it should/could have passed. Any information you can give on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Answer:

The California State ASM (accelerated simulation mode) smog check requires your Nissan Altima be tested while only in DRIVE. Overdrive should not be engaged. The troubling indication you've made is the disconnection of the TPS.

Disconnecting the TPS is not a condition required (or allowed) during the administration of the smog inspection. If you are certain this occurred, we recommend contacting the BAR regarding this matter. (800) 952-5210.
