Can I register a 1994 Toyota Tercel from Nevada in California.

I am looking to purchase a 1994 Toyota Tercel with an automatic transmission. I live in California & the car is registered in Nevada.  The seller tells me it's a Federal car 49 states legal.

Will I have a problem passing smog & registration with this car in California? It is a 1994 Toyota Tercel with an automatic transmission. The seller says its 49 state legal and was registered as a government federal car. I don't want to buy a car I won't be able to register. I do understand I need to pass a smog test at a shop but I've never heard of this so I want to make sure. I know California can be tough on this stuff & I just don't want to waste money on a car I won't be able to drive. As far as I know, the car is all stock. The seller hasn't changed anything except normal maintenance items. I'd appreciate any advice you can give me on this car purchase, thanks. Dan

Answer:

It's true, there is a difference with California legal and Federal legal emission requirements. And, for the most part California is stricter. However, a USED vehicle, which has all the Federal required emission components (has not been tampered with), can pass the California smog inspection process and be legally registered in this state.
