1984 Toyota Pickup Truck Engine Conversion to 22RE from 22R

Is an engine conversion from a 22r to 22re ok as far as the California smog check is concerned? Will my 1984 Toyota pass the smog check with a 22RE engine?

I have a 1984 Toyota truck (lifted) with webber carberator and it is not passing the smog check. I want to convert this truck to a fuel injection with 22re conversion kit so that it runs better and pollutes much less, but I don't know if I can do this and still pass the smog check in California.

I have been told that I need a lot of money to fix carburator problem so I'm hoping the conversion is cheaper and more efficient. Question is, is it legal. Or what can I do to keep this truck CA legal.

I live in a semi rural area and use this vehicle in all types of weather. I depend on it and want to keep it on the road. If I can't convert, what do I need at a minimum to at least pass temporarily ...thank you so much for your time.

Answer:

You'll need to make VERY certain (with the upgrade kits manufacturer) that it is for legal use in California. The upgrade fuel injection kit MUST have a CARB number (Executive Order Number) indicating that it is for legal use in California. If it has a CARB number and it is built for use on your 1984 Toyota Truck, then you can pass the smog check with it installed on your vehicle.

Have the documentation available for the smog technician at the time of smog check, and you also might want to check with the CA State Smog Check Referees Office prior to starting this upgrade. You may contact the State Referees office at (800) 622-7733.
