1995 Oldsmobile Cierra from Out-of-State

I currently live in Michigan. I'm undecided if I should drive to California or fly due to the smog check requirements for my car. If it doesn't pass the smog test, what would it cost so it will pass?

Answer:

Smog laws in California are stringent. This is not to say your Oldsmobile Cierra can't pass a smog check here, but its emissions are not up to par it may cost a bit to get it repaired. There is a difference with California legal and Federal legal emission requirements. However if your Oldsmobile Cierra is equipped with all the Federal required emission components (which is originaly equipped with) it can pass the California smog check and register with the CA DMV.

The rule is any USED vehicle which is equipped with the necessary Federal Emission Components is eligible for California registration as long as the vehicle's exhaust emissions fall within California's limits and the vehicle's emission system has not been tampered with.
