Hyundai Accent 2001 Emission Monitors Not Ready - Smog Check Denied

My Hyundai Accent 2001 was denied Star smog test only. Why?

We just brought this Hyundai Accent and took it to a smog check center to see if its ready to be tested. The guy who was doing the smog check said its not ready and that we needc to drive a few miles so it can reset the monitor . We drove 95 miles in 2 days and came back to get the car tested and the technician said it was still not ready, plus he noticed my Hyundai had a bit of smoke from the exhaust.

He checked the car and said he knows the car's lights work and everything, and that the check engine light or others weren't on. He said he wouldn't get it smogged but to get it diagnosed but unfortunately today is Sunday and we wanted to get the car smogged so we can register it in our name and get insurance so we can go to school and work.

We took it to a other smog station and they said with the exhaust just to keep it running and drive it a lot to reset the monitor just like the other place said... but 95 miles? How many miles should we drive? Is this normal if we cant smog can we not register the car? 167k miles one owner. everything seemed fine the owner said he worked on it but minor things, but he wouldn't get it smogged. We would like full detailed thoughts on this plz thank you for your time.

Answer:

Getting your Hyundia Accent to set its Emission Monitors can be tricky. We usually recommend driving a vehicle which has incomplete at least 200-300 miles; and over the course of a week. Below however we've outlined a generic OBDII drive cycle which well followed correctly should complete your car's monitors.

Begin by: (Make sure you have between 1/4 and 3/4 fuel in the gas tank. The EVAP test will not run while your Hyundai Accent  has a full tank of gas or the gas tank is near empty).

- Start the engine. Idle the engine in drive for two and a half minutes with the A/C and rear defroster on.

- Turn the A/C and rear defrost off, and accelerate to 55 mph at half throttle.

- Hold at a steady speed of 55 mph for three minutes.

- Decelerate (coast down) to 20 mph without braking.

- Accelerate back to 55 to 60 mph at ¾ throttle.

- Hold at a steady speed of 55 to 60 mph for five minutes.

- Decelerate (coast down) to a stop without braking.

If all other emissions systems are functioning properly, completing the drive cycle above should set the emission monitors required to pass the smog check. It will not hurt to perform the drive cycle 2 or 3 times before the smog inspection. Take caution when performing drive cycles on public roadways.
