1996 Chevy Cavalier Failing for High NO

1996 Chevy Cavalier failing the smog check for high NO two times. The smog check technician said it was high NO. My Chevy Cavalier measured  752 at the first test. Today it was 1335? I have no check engine lights on, and the engine runs great. The only time it  overheats is at a drive through, and never anywhere else? I have to pay the registration today. What can I do? This is my only vehicle and I can't afford a new one. Where can I take it that can tell me what to do that is affordable? I'm at a complete loss and now have $120.00 wasted on smog checks. Please Help me I don't know what I'm supposed to do?

Answer:

Nitrous Oxide or NO is created when an engine's combustion chamber temperature reaches over 2500F. Since you mention your Chevy Cavalier has an overheating problem, we recommend getting this fixed first. You have to make sure your Chevy is running cool to avoid creating high NO. Running even slightly hotter them normal will create NO.
