Chevy Colorado Needs a CA Smog Check But I'm Out of State

I am in Texas for school, my smog is due in October, but I won't get my car back to CA until May at the earliest. What do I do?

I have a 2007 Chevy Colorado that is due for a smog in October. Am I exempt from smogging the truck if I am in Texas, though still registered in CA? I don't plan on getting the car back to CA until May, at the very earliest. What do I do? Thank you!

Answer:

Do not obtain a smog inspection in another state; it will not be valid in California. You do not need to bring your Chevy Colorado to California in order to complete your registration. Simply fill out and sign DMV's "Statement of Facts" form explaining that your vehicle is out of state and the registration tags will be mailed to wherever the car is currently located. You can obtain a "Statement of Facts" form by calling the California DMV at (800)777-0133 or downloading it online.
