2000 Honda Civic Failed Smog Test High NOx

My 2000 Honda Civic failed for high NOx. It measured 892 at 15 mph and the max allowed was 487. I've taken it to be diagnosed and they said it was out of alignment. I had it aligned and took it back to the diagnostic shop it passed on their machine but when I took it to the test only station it failed again for the same reason. I've changed the spark plug, wires distributor, coil, and air filter. I've been told it could be the EGR valve but I can't find one on the car. Any suggestions?

Answer:

More than likely your Honda Civic does not have an EGR valve. Our Emissions Application Guide indicates 2000 year model Honda engine 1.5 and 1.6 liter are not equipped with EGR valves. Vehicles without EGR valves have a tendency to develop CAT problems sooner then those which are equipped. Due to the fact there is no EGR valve to reduce NOx, this operation is performed by the CAT, and proper fuel management.

If after fuel and ignition systems are inspected and either no faults found or faults found and repaired, yet your Honda still fails the smog test, consideration should be given to a defective CAT.
