1999 Ford F-150 Trouble Code OBDII P0453

What do I need to do so that my Ford F-150 can pass the star smog test? The check engine light is reading Code P0453. Please help!

Answer:

Trouble code P0453 on your Ford F-150 indicates a problem with the EVAP system. The exact description of P0453 is Evaporative Emissions Control System Pressure Sensor High Input.

Your Ford F-150 will likely not have any noticeable symptoms except for the Check Engine Light being ON.

Your Ford F-150's EVAP System is designed to allow fuel tank vapors to be purged into the engine's intake manifold and burnt with the already present air/fuel mixture. The EVAP system periodically performs a Pressure Check, using a pressure sensor, to ensure that there are no leaks with the system.

When the PCM triggers a Trouble Code P0453 this indicates your Ford's engine computer (also known as PCM for Powertrain Control Module) has noticed the EVAP pressure sensor is reporting higher than normal pressure. This may be due to either a faulty pressure sensor or an actual high pressure condition.

DTC P0453 may be caused by one or more of the following failures:

  1. Disconnected, detached, broken, loose signal wire on the Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor (FTP).
  2. FTP Sensor signal wire shorted to power or loss of ground to the FTP Sensor.
  3. Defective Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor.
  4. High pressure in fuel tank due to blockage in EVAP purge hoses.
