Can I drive my Toyota that failed the smog check but the registration hasn't expired yet?
I received the registration renewal from DMV requiring the smog check at the test only stations. I'm pretty sure that my Toyota Tercel DX 1993 is very likely to fail it this time around. Now, let's say it fails the smog check but I still have a couple of months until the registration will expire. The question is can I drive it until then? The thing is I'm planning to retire it by selling to the state, so I'm trying to figure out how to time it, so that I can drive it (legally) until it's ready to retire, i.e. until the application to retire is approved etc. Answer:
Yes you can drive your Toyota legally after it fails the smog test only
inspection until the registration tags expire. I'd recommend you get the
smog test as soon as possible and send in the retirement application form.
It usually takes a few weeks to get the approval. After getting the approval
to sell your Toyota to the state, you will have a few weeks to complete the
transaction. If you start the process now everything will fall into place
before your tags expire.
