Chevy G30 Engine Swap with GM 350 CID

1979 Chev G-30 American Clipper Class C motor home. Current engine 400 CID Small Block. no erg, I want to replace the engine with a new 350 CID GM engine (L31-R). This is the current replacement truck heavy duty engine available from GM. Will this be acceptable for smog approval? IT is not a direct replacement but will be better because the engine improvements in the past 30 years. The compression ratios are very similar and both engines burn regular 87 octane fuel.

Regarding the engine swap you are considering: Yes, you can do it. However, while installing the new GM 350 CID engine, you will need to install all the emission components for that engine as well (including computer ECU). After the swap is complete, your Chevy G30 will need to be inspected and smog checked by the California State Referee. The Referee will ensure that the job was done properly and that the new engine does not pollute. If all is well they will issue you a BAR label which will be placed on your GM's chassis which will be an indication that the vehicle is California legal and allow you to obtain subsequent smog tests at ordinary smog stations, as opposed to the referee center.
