Toyota Corolla Exhaust Manifold Cracked 49-State Legal

My 1996 Toyota Corolla with 1.8L, originally non-CA car, failed the visual part of the smog test ("tampered") because the smog technician noticed the catalytic converter it came with wasn't CARB approved (and had been welded in). The car originally must have come from out-of-state - the remainder of its (stock) exhaust system is non-California, i.e., it lacks the upstream CAT. The car previously passed CA SMOG in 2008, 2010, and 2012 as is. I'm installing a CARB-approved rear cat, but noticed the 49-state exhaust manifold is cracked. Can I just replace it? A 50-state legal manifold requires the upstream cat and uses a different (1-wire) O2 sensor.

Answer:

The exhaust header for this Toyota Corolla, unlike the catalytic converter, will need to be replaced with a 49-state emissions exhaust header only. Installing the California version will cause a smog check visual failure (tamper). We've checked local auto parts store. There is an availability for 49-state emissions legal Toyota Corolla exhaust manifolds. The exhuast manifold will be an OEM part (49-state emissions legal) approved for sale in California; Not to get confused with a California legal exhaust manifold approved for sale in California.
