Swapping Engine on Jeep Wrangler with Chevy Camaro

I am doing a engine transmission change in my 1989 Jeep Wrangler. I fully understand that the donor engine must be the same year or newer and that all of the emissions components from the donor engine must be installed and functional which is not a problem. However I got the engine and components from a manual transmission vehicle (Chevy Camaro 3.1 V6). This engine has the A.I.R. system on it. I have the GM factory service manual (Not the Haynes manual) and the manual states that the AIR system on the 1992 3.1L V6 (Vin T) is for manual transmission only. I am installing the engine together with a GM 700r4 Transmission. I have the TCC wiring done and correct PROM in the ECM I have to take the jeep to a Smog Referee on completion. Do I install the A.I.R. system or leave it off. Thanks and best regards.

Answer:

CARB regulations require the transmission match the engine your are using and not the other way around. Technically the engine you purchased would be a normal "engine swap" if the transmission you were installing was a manual. The question is will the referee allow you to modify the new engine by removing its AIR injection system. If no other emission component is effected by the removal of the AIR (i.e. downstream injection ports, CAT ports) and all other engine sensors and functionality is identical to non-AIR installed engine, the referee might allow the vehicle to pass by not declaring the AIR removal a "tamper".
