2006 Ford F-150 Failed Visual Inspection

Why is there a visual component to the CA state smog inspection at all? If the whole purpose of a smog check is to make sure that the vehicle is not polluting why should it fail a visual inspection. I have an aftermarket cool air intake from K&N installed but the EO# was incorrect for my vehicle year, so it failed visual for a "MODIFIED" intake. I was able to get the correct executive order sticker for my year and it passed.

Answer:

California's Air Resources Board requires aftermarket emission parts, such as your Ford F-150's aftermarket air intake unit, to possess an EO (Executive Order) number when being installed on a vehicle intended to be used on California public roadways.

Simply replacing an EO tag to match a required aftermarket emission component when the EO tag does not belong to that component, in a best case scenario, is considered an "emissions tamper"... worst case, smog check fraud.

Aftermarket air intake units are designed and approved by CARB after extensive laboratory research. Components not approved by ARB or approved by ARB but not for the vehicle the component is being installed on, will cause a smog check failure.
