2003 Coach House Platinum Motor Home California Registration and Smog Check

The RV in question is a 2003 Coach House Platinum motor home with a 2002 Ford E450 powered chassis; currently registered out-of-state.

I have a potential California buyer for this motor home which is in excellent working order. Questions: 1. How long does the new California owner have to register the vehicle in California and have it smog tested after purchasing it out of state? 2. What is a reasonable cost range estimate for this process?

Answer:

Upon moving to California or acquiring a vehicle (or RV) from out of state, a California buyer (owner) has 30 days to complete California registration including obtaining a California emissions inspection. Since this particular 2003 Coach motor home is a used model, no emission system modification should be required. Used out-of-state vehicles are eligible for California registration as long as their exhaust emissions fall within California's emission cutscores, and their emission systems have not be tampered with. All factory or OEM equipment must be installed.

On average a motor home smog test (smog inspection) in California costs between $70-$100.00 plus $8.25 CA certificate fee.
