Registering 2012 Toyota RAV4 from Canada in California

I am a canadian citizen, relocating to California for my job, for at least a 2 year period. I plan on importing my 2012 Toyota RAV 4 in 2015 with my family. I have received a letter from Toyota Canada confirming my vehicle complies with the US Federal and EPA legislation. I have also read on the dmv.ca.gov and arb.ca.gov that California has special requirements for vehicles imported from other countries (including Canada).

It may be very costly or impossible to modify these vehicles to meet California emission requirements. Regarding the arb.ca.gov information, my car reaches a smog rating of 6/10. Could you tell me if I will be authorized to register my vehicle in California and if my Toyota RAV4 will pass the smog test ? How much does it cost to modify this kind of vehicle to meet California emission requirements ? Thanks a lot!

Answer:

Considering your have a letter from Toyota indicating this particular Toyota RAV4 is US EPA certified we have to assume you will not have a problem registering your vehicle in California. A California Smog Check Referee's Office (as opposed to a standard smog stations) will need to conduct the initial smog inspection. We recommend contacting the Smog Check Referee's office at (800) 622-7733 prior to importing this vehicle in order to verify this as fact.
