Honda CRX Federal Emissions Needs New CAT In California

Hi, I have an 84 Honda CRX that is from out-of-state and is now in California. I bought it from a private party and it turns out during a smog check pretest that it fails the smog test and needs a new catalytic converter. I should have asked about the smog check before I bought it... I know. However, my smog technician says it is a Federal Emissions Certified car.

I look up the federal CAT's and it turns out they can't be shipped/sold in California, and I can't find the exact Direct Fit Cat Converter (OEM) that is California compliant nor do I know if my technician would be allowed to install and adapt an after market catalytic converter that is CA compliant let alone order the Federal one. I seriously need some help here! Thank you.

Answer:

We recommend you contact the State Smog Check Parts Locator. The Part Locator Hotline might be able to help you find a California complaint (CARB Approved) catalytic converter for your Honda CRX.

If the emission component you are seeking is not available they may be able to issue you a "Limited Parts Exemption", through the state smog check referee's office. In most cases the needed parts are found. You may contact the State Smog Check Parts locator by calling 1-800-622-7733.
