1995 Honda Accord Overheated and Failed High NOx

So I took my 1995 Honda Accord to get smogged and my heater hose busted during the smog test which caused it to overheat. I failed the smog check. The smog tech said the rpms were out of spec. I fixed the coolant hose and my rpms were over 1000 on idle so I fixed that too but the smog test also showed my Honda's NOx was high during low rpms. Could that just be due to my car overheating during the smog test? It passed every other test. I just want to know if im good to go back and retest. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:

Having overheated your Honda Accord engine during the smog inspection would have most definitely increased NOx emissions. Since you've fixed the RPM speed issue we recommend having a second smog test administered. NOx emission should be lower if your Honda Accord no longer has an overheating problem; hopefully low enough to pass the smog test. If NOx is still high, we recommend inspecting your Honda's EGR valve, and also fuel control for a possible lean fuel condition.

What causes high NOx?
