2014 Ford Focus Titanium Registering in California

Owner is military, recently assigned to CA. This Ford Focus is 49 state emission rated. What is required to register in California? Any problems if we sell this Ford Focus to a CA resident? Extra costs? Etc. Thank you.

Answer:

When moving to California from another state, you are allowed to register a new 49-state emission certified vehicle (such as this 2014 Ford Focus) only if it was first registered by you in your home state, or for military personnel, in the last state of your military service.

California considers a vehicle "new" if it has less than 7,500 miles on it. California will not allow a CA resident to purchase a "new" vehicle and register it in California if the vehicle is not 50-State (California) emission certified.

In this specific case, as mentioned, if this Ford Focus was previously registered to the same person who is seeking registration in California, the registration will go through. Verify this with the CA DMV at (800) 952-5210. When applying for vehicle registration in California, you will be asked to show proof that your Ford Focus was registered out-of-the-state, and in your name.
