Does a 1988 GMC 4x4 Still Need to be smog checked?

Looking at a 1988 GMC 4x4 pick up. Needs lots of work but I'm looking at as a fixer upper. Looks to be missing most of the smog related stuff. Is the 88 still being checked for smog?

Answer:

So far the 1988 GMC still needs a smog check. You'll need to find and install all the emission components on the engine in order to pass the smog test. The first things people usually disconnect or remove on these vehicles are the smog pump, the EVAP system is usually disconnected, and possibly aftermarket headers installed. Look for these things. The repair for these faults might not be worth the cost.
