I have a 2001 Toyota Prius that I am trying to sell. Its catalytic converter has failed which means the check engine light is always on. Will the buyer of my Toyota Prius ever have to get a smog check? I have heard rumors of it being required in January 2015. I asked the California DMV and they said NO. Tomorrow I am asking the California Air Resource Board. I thought I might as well ask you also. Thank you very much!
Answer:
At the current moment smog checks are not required on the Toyota Prius but it is correct that in the near future they will be. The Bureau of Automotive Repairs has not given an exact date as of yet. 2000 & newer Hybrid powered cars, trucks, and vans will soon need to under go a smog check inspection. We will advise consumers on SmogTips.com when the program takes effect.
