How much should I expect to pay to repair my 1991 Toyota Previa so that it can pass the smog check? It failed the 15 mph part and barely passed the 25 mph.
This car is recently purchaced (transfer of title registration). I was told $99 to diagnose the smog test failure at a test & repair smog stations, right off the top and then repair costs.
How much tops can I expect to be charged? I do not want to waist $99.00 dollar if I can't afford the repairs? Please help me im stressed to the max! Im told I shouldn't have bought the car! And is there any hope that I can get an estimate before paying $99.00! Thank you.
Answer:
A $99 quote for a smog check diagnosis is quite fair. Typically a smog station will not quote a flat price rather an hourly diagnosis wage (usually around $60.00 an hour) and diagnosis time will normally rage between 2-3 hours. A flat $99.00 is not bad.
We recommend asking the smog station owner (manager/technician) if he/she will guarantee the diagnosis and/or repairs. In other words, if they say this Toyota Previa needs a new catalytic converter (CAT), and you let them replace it, will they guarantee your van will pass? So just ask these questions and if the answers make sense then go for it. Some times it is possible not to be able to promise a passing car. Some times the problems a vehicle has are just to many and by replacing one component there is no guarantee to pass. In these cases the repairs will have to performed step-by-step and the vehicle retested after every repair.
