2002 Toyota Camry Emission Monitors Not Ready

I have a 2002 Toyota Camry. It has two "Not Ready" emission monitors. One is for the catalytic converter and the other for the Evaporative Control System. Both indicate not complete. I drove for 120 miles including highway speeds and over several day after having the check engine light and trouble codes checked. I have already replaced O2 sensors, mass airflow sensor, did a tune up and replaced a bad fuel injector... now what should I do?

Answer:

If you're certain your 2002 Toyota Camry doesn't have any emission or engine problems which are stopping the Drive Cycle from completing then we have to assume the Drive Cycle is not being followed properly.

The Drive Cycle is a series of operating conditions which trigger your Toyota's ECU to self-test certain emission systems; upon which said emission systems will become READY or COMPLETE. On 2001 model and newer vehicles, all emission monitors including the Catalytic Efficiency monitor and EVAP monitor, must be complete in order to pass a smog check.

Below will indicate the steps necessary to complete a drive cycle. Insure you begin with the engine cold and the fuel tank with between 1/4 to 3/4 gasoline. The EVAP monitor portion of the drive cycle will not run if the fuel tank is full or close to empty.

  • Start the engine. Idle the engine in drive for two and a half minutes with the A/C and rear defroster on.
  • Turn the A/C and rear defrost off, and accelerate to 55 mph at half throttle.
  • Hold at a steady speed of 55 mph for three minutes.
  • Decelerate (coast down) to 20 mph without braking.
  • Accelerate back to 55 to 60 mph at ¾ throttle.
  • Hold at a steady speed of 55 to 60 mph for five minutes.
  • Decelerate (coast down) to a stop without braking.

If all other emissions systems are functioning properly, completing the drive cycle above should make your 2002 Toyota Camry's emission monitors READY to pass the smog check. We recommend performing the drive cycle 2 or 3 times to make sure all monitors are complete.

Take extra caution when performing drive cycles on public roadways.
