Chevy Malibu Theft System Indicator Light ON

If my 2001 Chevy Malibu's theft system indicator light is on will that cause me to fail my smog test?

Answer:

If your Chevy Malibu's Service Engine Soon light is not on and the car starts and drives fine, the Anti-Theft light alone will not cause a smog check failure. It should be noted that a solid anti-theft light usually indicates a defective ignition switch.

Assuming your Chevy Malibu starts fine, it is important to ensure that the ignition switch is not causing any emission related trouble such as power loss to the engine control computer, readiness flags (emission monitors) being accidentally erased, or communication errors between CAN modules.

Assuming there are no drivability (or starting) problems, the service engine soon light is NOT on (while engine is running), we'd recommend having the smog test administered. If you have a scan tool or can borrow or would like to purchase one, you can use it to check to see if your Chevy Malibu's emission monitors are "complete" or in "ready" status. The emission monitors will be required to be "complete" before the smog test in order for your car to pass the smog inspection. If any monitor is incomplete or not-ready, your Malibu will fail the smog check. You can always ask a smog station to check the monitors before the smog test administered. The smog station may choose to charge a fee for this service.
