2002 Toyota Camry Battery Died and Needs Smog Test

My Toyota Camry was sitting in a garage for 2 months. My car's battery died. I jump started it. My registration renewal deadline for the car is coming up soon. Do I go for smog test now or should I give it a wekk or so? I don't know if it will fail because of the dead battery and I don't want to take a chance.

Answer:

You should most definitely drive your Toyota Camry for at least one week before taking it in for the smog test. While your battery died, it erased the "emission monitors" which were recorded in your Camry's engine control unit - ECU (engine's computer). Without the emission monitors being "complete" or "ready", your Toyota can not pass a smog check. We recommend driving for your Toyota for at least one week (300 miles) in all traffic conditions, highway and city; and while the gas tank is between 1/4 and 3/4 full. This will allow the ECU to perform the necessary self tests needed to set (make COMPLETE or READY) the emission monitors. You may then have the smog inspection administered.
