Lincoln Towncar Limo EVAP Failed

I have a 1995 Lincoln Town Car stretch limo.  It passed Smog Test in past but now the EVAP portion of the test failed.  What do I do?  I've only put about 2,000 miles on it since May 2013 & no changes to any components.  Thank you!

Answer:

It appears your Lincoln Town Car failed the LPFET (Low Pressure Fuel Evaporative Test). The Low Pressure Fuel Evaporative Test (also known as the EVAP test) ensures that there are no leaks in-between the hose leading from the gas tank to charcoal canister, or anywhere fuel vapors may be released in to the atmosphere, either in liquid form or vapor.

It is possible the EVAP system has developed a break or disconnect somewhere along the chassis of the limo (between the EVAP system in the engine compartment and the fuel tank. We recommend tracing the EVAP hoses to ensure there is no line break or disconnect. It is possible the vehicle's EVAP lines became brittle and possibly disconnected from not being driven often.

How is the LPFET performed? During the LPFET the smog technician clamps the end of the fuel vapor hose leading to the charcoal canister and pressurizes the gas tank with Nitrous Oxide via the LPFET test machine. The machine will then measure the drop in pressure due to any leaks.

If in fact your Lincoln Town Car has a leak somewhere in EVAP system, it will be necessary to locate the leak and repair it prior to being able to pass the LPFET. Be sure not to confuse fuel pressure lines with vapor hose. Pressure lines deliver fuel only. Vapor lines move fuel tank vapors to the charcoal canister and then vent them to the engine's intake manifold.
