When my Mercedes starts I can hear the smog pump running but then it stos in about 20 sec or so. It won't start again until the vehicle is turned off and restarted. I'm afraid that it is getting locked up or something. Is it supposed to start and stop like that, or does it have to run all the time? Thank you for your help.
Answer:
This is normal operation for your Mercedes Benz E320. The electric smog pump is only energized when the engine first starts to help heat up the catalytic converter quicker; by injection fresh air in to the exhaust stream. Once the engine warms up the smog pump (or air injection system) stops running. Totally normal.
