1998 Ford Mustang has expired tags since I didn't do the smog check two years ago.

Over 2 years ago, I paid the renewal fee for my Ford Mustang but did not do the smog check. So I did not receive the new tags. Now I realized I have not received a renewal notice the last 2 years. Could I bring in the old paperwork stating I need a smog check? Would I then be able to receive the tags. Would I also be able to have the tags that expire in 2011? My last tag I have on the car expired in 2008.
Answer:

All of what you need to get your Ford Mustang back on the road and legal can be done... But I'm afraid, not without some hefty fines. Start by visiting the DMV and explain your situation. They will give you a list of required documents you will need at this point (mainly a smog check certificate - which by the way you can get right now if you'd like without even visiting the DMV) and also the amount of money owed to bring your Mustang's registration status current. And yes, you can pay them the penalty fees you owe (for not completing registration; yes there is a fine for that) from 2008, 2009 and 2010 to get tags which will be current until 2011. but the most important thing they will need now, besides your money, is a passing smog test certificate and proof of insurance. And again you can get a smog check before you visit the DMV to speed things up if you'd like. Just visit a "test only" smog check center, take them whatever paperwork you have from before and they will smog check you car; no problem.
