My 1998 Mazda Protege needs a smog check, can I pay the registration fees first?

I am needing a smog certificate for my Mazda and need to go to a Test Only or Gold Shield station. Can you let me know if I can go ahead and pay the fee for my car registration before I get the smog test done?
Answer:

Yes, you can pay the registration fees first, but if the entire registration renewal process (including smog test) is not complete before the tags on your Mazda expire you will not receive new tags or registration stickers, and could receive a registration ticket if stopped by the police. If it turns out that you need more time to get your Mazda' smog check done, ask the DMV for a temporary registration tag (that's the pink paper you see some cars displaying on the rear windshield).
