2000 Mazda Protege ES From Out of State

I have purchased the aforementioned from out of California and I will be moving to CA soon. Although my car runs smoothly with no engine check lights on, I am worried about the strict smog test requirements.

I heard that the California smog test requires special parts to be installed on the vehicle and that it almost does not worth to try to bring a car purchased outside CA and register it because the of the cost of installing the special parts required by CA.

My question is: is it true what I heard about such parts? What are they? If I have the oxygen sensors and catalyst converter in good condition, what else can go wrong?

Thank you

Answer:

No additional smog parts are needed. It's true, there is a difference with California legal and Federal legal emission requirements. However if your 2000 Mazda Protege is equipped with all the Federal required emission components (which it originally came with) it can pass the California smog check and register with the CA DMV.

The rule is that used vehicles which are brought to California can be registered here as long as there emission equipment (smog parts) have not been tampered with and the vehicle pass the California smog check.
