Want to Bring my 2000 Toyota Camry to California

Hello. I'm trying to decide whether to drive my 2000 Toyota Camry from Virginia to San Francisco to have out there. Is there any information on the engine or somewhere on the car that would indicate if it was built with everything necessary to pass CA smog tests? How much money could we be looking at if car needs to be brought up to CA standards. Emissions and smog checks are not required where we live.

Answer:

You can bring your Toyota Camry to California and have it registered here without any additional smog parts, as long as its original emissions system has not been tampered with and the Camry passes the CA smog check. It is not required that the vehicle be 50-State California Emissions Complaint. Only when a brand new vehicle is being brought to California must its underhood emissions label indicate it is California Emissions legal/equipped.

In this specific case it may be that your 2000 Toyota Camry is only 49-State Emissions Compliant, none the less, it will not stop it from obtaining California registration. To find out whether your Toyota is equipped with California smog equipment, check the underhood emissions label.
