I'm putting a 1995 Suzuki Sidekick motor in my 1988 Suzuki Samurai. Which catalytic converter do I use? The CAT from the 1995 engine or the 1988? Thank you.
Answer:
You will need to use the catalytic converter from the new engine (1995 Suzuki Sidekick). In fact, all emission related components will need to be transferred over, including the ECU. Once the engine change is complete the your Suzuki Samurai will need to be inspected by the State Smog Check Referee Office. The Referee will ensure that the job was done properly and that the new engine does not pollute. If all is well they will issue you a BAR label (Blue Tag) which will be placed somewhere on your vehicles chassis which will be an indication that the vehicle is California legal. Subsequent smog inspections can be obtained at ordinary smog stations. You can contact the referee by calling (800)622-7733.
