Mercedes Benz SLK 230 BAS ESP Light ON

The BAS/ESP light is on, on my 2002 Mercedes Benz SLK 230. I believe I just need to replace the yaw sensor or maybe even just the brake light switch.

1. Can I still bring my car for a smog test before the BAS ESP can be fixed?

2. There is no check engine light. Car is running smoothly.

3. If the emission test is clean, will it pass smog with the BAS ESP light on?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:

The smog check does not inspect the Brake Assist System (BAS) or the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) light. As long as the fault which is causing the BAS and/or ESP lights to illuminate is not causing the check engine light (CEL) to turn on as well, your 2002 Mercedes Benz SLK230 can pass the smog test. It has been our experience that when both the BAS and ESP lights turn on simultaneously, the problem is usually due to a defective brake light switch. posted by SmogTips Support
