Can I take my 1974 Porsche with a Subaru engine to a smog station without a letter from the DMV?
Assuming a 2004 Subaru engine is installed in a 1974 Porsche, how can I get a smog test WITHOUT any letter from the DMV; i.e. can I just drive into the nearest smog station for a test? Answer:
You can drive your Porsche into any local smog check station for a smog
inspection without DMV paperwork but you'll have to find out from the DMV
first whether your Porsche needs a Test Only smog check or a Regular smog
check. Plus, if you do the engine change you'll need to go over to a smog
check referee's office first; with or without paperwork. Once you change
your Porsche's engine over to the Subaru, your Porsche will no longer be
smog check exempt because of its year. The smog program goes by the engine
year, not the chassis.
